Monday, September 3

Gary called yesterday morning at 11:16 a.m. to tell me he had crossed over into Maine.  He said it was raining and the mud was awful.  He got his camera out to get a picture of himself in front of the sign and it had gotten wet.   A lady stopped by, took a picture and said she'd send it to him. What nice people he has come across.  This morning he called and said the trail was like walking over rocks as big as train cars.  That slows the miles per day down.  Looking at what is ahead, it looks like up and down large slopes for the next 40 or so miles.  It doesn't get much better after that but they don't look like they are so straight up and down.

  1. a group of us did a section hike southbound from Stratton, Maine to Grafton Notch and it was a lot of ups and downs where we did 8 - 9 miles a day because of the terrain

  3. Barbara, the ascents and descents in Maine alone are equivalent to ascending and descending Mt. Everest 3 times! Brutal. Nick only averaged 9-10 miles per day there. And his knees were really sore too. Good to take it slow. Gary is doing great and definitely in the home stretch! You must be so looking forwatd to having him home again!!
