Saturday, March 31

I went to the post office today and recieved a letter and a package from Gary.  The package was really pretty heavy, stuff he didn't want to carry with him.  I also got a note.  The First Baptist Church at Franklin, NC made breakfast for them.  They took his picture and he sent it to me.  Wow, he is looking like he needs to have his sister, Cindy meet him and give him a trim.

Tuesday, March 27

I got a call again today from Gary and he sounded great.  He seems to have gotten used to the walk and semi-enjoying it.  He stayed in the hotel the other evening and they had a cook out for the hikers and spent the evening  sitting around the campfire.  He really seemed to have enjoyed that.

He has met up with two other hikers that are walking with him, one from England, and the other from San Francisco.  They are both 62 years old.  I am glad they have each other to watch out for.  He said they are walking from 12-15 miles a day.

Monday, March 26

Gary called today when I was mowing.  I had my phone with me just in case but didn't hear it. He left a message but I accidently erased it when I was closing out of my phone.  I think I can remember some of what I heard.  He has crossed over into North Carolinia.  He said yesterday he walked 12 miles and today 11.  I think last night they stayed in a hotel and he washed his clothes.....including his camera.  He got the card out and is sending it home...hope it still works....because the camera is lost. He bought a disposable one to use until we get him another one.  I am not sure a disposable one isn't the best thing to have.  He called on another guys phone so I hope he didn't wash the phone:)

Thursday, March 22

I just got a call from Gary tonight after he walked 15+ miles.  He is at Helen, GA and has walked 58.6 miles.  He seemed in good spirits having spent the day in the rain.  He said the sites from the top were beautiful and he is taking lots of pictures.  I hope he will get them to me soon so I can include them.

He is impressed that the volunteers are waiting at the crossings of the trail through towns, or where ever they pass through with snacks.  He said a fella named Bruce gave him water, grapes, bananas and an orange pop on ice.  Another gave him chicken fingers and his favorite....a snickers bar.

He is planning to say in a hotel soon with some friends he has met along the way.  I am sure a shower will be nice and having no razor with him....maybe a shave and do laundry.

I ordered a new tent for him and am having it sent to one of his stops because he is carrying a 3-person tent still.  The weight I'm sure is a killer.

Do keep him in your prayers.  He sounded tired tonight but I am so glad I got to talk to him and know he was OK.

Tuesday Morning

Gary called this morning and said they had walked 12 miles the first day and 10 the second day.  He walked 9 yesterday.  Mark flew into Charleston this morning so Gary is going on alone.
He said he had taken pictures so hopefully I can post those when I get them.

Signing in at Amicalola Falls

Getting in Shape

Gary ran a few miles every other day to get in shape to walk.  I took them to Springer Mountain, Georgia on Friday and dropped he and Mark (Curley) off.  I haven't heard from them but am sure they are fine.  It appeared there were several others registering also.
